Hackles

Hair on neck and back raised involuntarily in fright or anger.

Hackney action

The high lifting of the front feet.

Haloes

Dark pigmentation round or over eyes.

Ham

Muscular development of the hind leg above the stifle.

Handler

A person who handles a dog in the show ring or at a field trial. See also professional handler.

Hard expression

Harsh, staring expression.

Hard-mouthed

A dog that bites or marks with its teeth the game it retrieves.

Harlequin

Patched or pied colouration, usually black on white, or blue on white. A term used of Great Danes.

Harefoot

An elongated foot like that of a hare.

Harness

Markings around the shoulders and chest on certain breeds. Also equipment used to control and restrain.

Harsh coat

Stiff, wiry coat.

Haunch

Buttock or rump.

Haw

The third eyelid or membrane in the inside corner of the eye.

Hazel

Light brown eye colour.

Hearing dogs

Dogs trained to aid the deaf.

Heat

Seasonal period of the female. Oestrus. Season.

Heel

Rear part of the paw. Command to a dog to walk beside handler.

Height

Vertical measurements from the withers to the ground, referred to usually as shoulder height.

Herring gutted

Slab sided. Flat ribs with too little spring from spinal column.This term is also used to describe the dog whose bottom line sweeps up to quickly to the loin, robbing it of heart and lung room as well as length of diaphragm.

Hind leg

Leg from pelvis to foot.

Hindquarters

Rear part of dog from loin.

Hip dysplasia

Abnormal formation of hip joint.

Hock

The tarsus or collection of bones of the hind leg forming the joint between the second thigh and metatarsus.

Hocks well let down

Hock joints close to the ground.

Honourable scars

Scars from injuries suffered as a result of work.

Hound

A dog originally used for hunting by scent or sight.

Hound marked

A colouration composed of white, black and tan. The ground colour, usually white, may be marked with tan and/or black patches on the head, neck, legs and tail. The extent and the exact location of such markings, however, differs in breeds and individuals

 

 

In-breeding

The mating of closely related dogs, i.e. father to daughter, mother to son, or brother to sister.

Incisors

The upper and lower front teeth between the canines.

Interbreeding

The breeding together of dogs of different varieties of a breed.

Iris

Flat, circular, coloured membrane within the eye.

Isabella

Fawn colour.

 

 

Jaws

The bones formingf the framework of the mouth.

Jewel eye

Whole eye tinged with red.

Jowls

Flesh of lips and jaws.

Judge

An arbiter in any competition involving dogs.

 

 

Keel

Bone forming floor of chest. Breastbone. Sternum.

Keen

Penetrating expression.

Kink tail

Malformation of the tail.

Knee joint

Stifle joint.

Knitting

Unsound gaiting action which starts with twisting elbows and toeing out. Crossing over. Weaving.

Knuckling over

Faulty structure of carpus (wrist) joint allowing it to double forward under the weight of the standing dog.
